To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.

My Office

My sunny, warm and tastefully decorated office is conveniently located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, on 86th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West.

The office is a short walk from the No. 1 train at 86th Street and Broadway and a hop from the B/C train at Central Park West. The office can be reached from the east and west by the 86th Street cross-town bus.   People also come by car or car pool.  There is a quiet waiting room where I will meet you.

The Initial Phone Consultation

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment, I suggest starting with a phone consultation.  The free consultation, which typically lasts 10-15 minutes, will give me a quick sense of what you would like to work on in therapy and allow you the opportunity to ask any questions you have of me or my practice.

I will assess whether I would be a good fit for you as a psychologist or whether you might be better served by someone else.  We can also discuss scheduling and fees at this time.

Your First Visit

The first appointment is a more in-depth consultation that usually lasts about 50 minutes.  This first session allows me to get a better picture of you and what you would like to accomplish through therapy.  At the conclusion of this consultation, we will discuss next steps and address any questions you may have.

Payment

Payment is due at the time of session and can be paid by cash, check, or PayPal.   At the beginning of the session, I will collect my current fee in full or, on a limited individual basis, a negotiated fee agreed upon in advance.

Interior of Dr. Ellen Carni’s Office

The only insurance network I participate in is Aetna.  However, many clients have out-of-network benefits as part of their insurance plans.  For clients using those benefits, I  provide itemized bills that contain all the information needed to submit a reimbursement claim to their insurance company.   Each insurance company reimburses differently so I strongly recommend calling and confirming your carrier’s reimbursement policy for out-of-network outpatient psychotherapy before your appointment.  Some important questions to ask your insurance carrier are:

  • What are my mental health benefits?

  • Is there a deductible and, if so, how much is it?

  • May I use an out-of-network provider?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?

  • How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
